Caravan and boat moisture — the long-term storage guide

Why caravans and boats develop that stored smell

Caravans and boats develop that distinctive stored smell because they sit sealed for months at a time, with no airflow, while moisture from cushions, mattresses, fabric blinds and the cabin itself slowly accumulates. The smell is not the caravan's fault. It is the chemistry of trapped humidity meeting natural fibres.

Before you lock up for the season

1.     Clean and dry everything washable. Cushion covers, sheets, towels. Anything damp will mould while you are away.

2.     Empty the fridge and prop the door open. A closed empty fridge becomes a moisture trap fast.

3.     Vent the water tanks and run dry. Standing water is the single biggest cause of off-season smell.

4.     Open all internal cupboards and drawers. Air needs to move between compartments while you are away.

5.     Leave the toilet cassette dry and propped slightly open.

6.     Place moisture absorbers in each main compartment — bedroom, kitchen area, bathroom, main living space.

Where to place moisture absorbers in a caravan

Hang one Dew Neutral pouch in each main living space — typically one in the bedroom, one in the kitchen / living area, and one in the bathroom. In a longer caravan or motorhome, add a fourth in the storage at the rear. The Neutral pouch is preferred for vehicles because the contained space concentrates any fragrance.

How long will absorbers last in storage

In a sealed, unventilated caravan in a humid coastal climate, expect a Dew pouch to fill in three to five weeks rather than the typical 60 days. The good news: when the pouch is full it has done its work and the moisture is no longer in your soft furnishings. The bad news: if you are storing for a full winter, plan to swap once midway through.

Boats — the additional considerations

Boats face everything a caravan faces plus the constant influence of the water below. Hang absorbers in the cabin, the head, and any sleeping berths. Avoid placing them directly above electronics or chart plotters. For boats that sit on a mooring rather than on the hard, a small solar-powered fan can move ten times more air per dollar than any product can absorb. Combine the two for serious storage.

Returning to a caravan after winter

7.     Open every door, window and roof vent for at least an hour before stepping inside.

8.     Remove and dispose of any full moisture absorbers. The reservoir of brine can be poured down an outside drain.

9.     Wipe down all surfaces with a barely damp cloth.

10.  Check soft furnishings for any mould spots. If you see any, treat with a mild vinegar solution and dry in sunlight.

11.  Run the gas, water and electrical systems through their startup checks before loading for your first trip.

What about damp-rid buckets for caravans?

Refillable calcium chloride buckets work and they hold more moisture per cycle than a pouch. The downside in a moving vehicle is the brine — if a bucket tips, the liquid is corrosive to metal fittings. For a stationary caravan in storage, a bucket can supplement pouches. For one that gets towed, pouches are the safer choice.
